Police in Kwale County have launched an intensive manhunt for a group of youths impersonating security officers to enforce COVID-19 government directives. These individuals have been illegally setting up roadblocks along the Lungalunga-Likoni road, extorting money from unsuspecting members of the public. Kwale Police Commander Joseph Nthenge, addressing the media in Kwale County on Thursday, condemned the actions of these unscrupulous youths, labeling their activities as illegal. He assured the public that those apprehended would face the full force of the law.

Commander Nthenge acknowledged the economic hardships brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic, which has left many jobless. However, he emphasized that these challenges should not be used as an excuse for engaging in criminal activities. "We understand dozens of people have been rendered jobless by the corona pandemic. However, this should not be a leeway for others to use illegal ways to survive," he warned. The police chief highlighted that the border towns of Matuga and Lunga Lunga have become hotspots for these rogue activities, with the youths exploiting the situation to demand bribes from travelers. "The suspects cheat the masses saying they would only allow them to cross over to the other county if they bribe them," he explained.

In addition to the roadblock scams, the police commander also issued a stern warning to youths from Mazeras in Kinango sub-county. These individuals have been posing as temporary road contractors along the Mazera-Kinango road, with the intent of extorting money from the public. Commander Nthenge urged parents to guide their children towards more constructive means of earning a living, stressing the importance of lawful conduct.

The COVID-19 pandemic has severely impacted the local economy, leading to the closure of hotels and other businesses, which has resulted in significant job losses in Kwale County and across the nation. This economic downturn has driven some individuals to resort to illegal activities as a means of survival, contributing to a rise in theft and other crimes in various areas within the county. The police are committed to curbing these activities and restoring order, ensuring that the law is upheld and that residents can go about their daily lives without fear of harassment or extortion.
