Kenya’s food processing industry is tightening fortification standards and the 2026 Kenya Millers Fortification Index now includes 32 companies representing 144 brands, up from five companies in 2022. The initiative covers maize flour, wheat flour and edible oils. Cereal Millers Association CEO Paloma Fernandes says greater industry ownership will strengthen quality standards and consumer confidence when it comes to food standards.
Food fortification normally adds vitamins and minerals to staple foods so that common products deliver more nutrients to ordinary households. In Kenya, the index focuses on maize flour, wheat flour and edible oils, which are widely consumed across income groups. It measures how processors comply with nutrition and food safety standards.
The growth in participation is significant. The index began with five companies back in 2022 and now it covers 32 companies and 144 brands. That expansion suggests more processors are adopting the standards rather than treating them as optional.
Fernandes says the greater industry ownership will strengthen standards and consumer confidence. Industry-led programmes can complement government regulation by encouraging firms to police their own products. Consumers are more likely to trust products that carry consistent, verifiable quality.
The initiative relies on two kinds of checks. Operational assessments look at how processors run their fortification processes on the factory floor. Laboratory tests then measure whether products contain the required nutrients and meet food safety rules.
Such checks matter because fortification only works when nutrient levels are consistent from batch to batch. Inconsistent fortification can leave the intended benefits unrealised, even when a company appears to comply on paper. Regular testing and transparent reporting are therefore central to the programme’s credibility.
The next step will be whether the index continues to add companies and brands, and whether results are published in a way consumers can check. Watch for updates on compliance rates and any new products covered by the standards.
