WhatsApp account hacked? Steps to regain access if you are suddenly logged out

WhatsApp users who are unexpectedly logged out of their accounts may have had their numbers activated on another device using their verification code.

In such cases, repeatedly attempting to log in may not immediately resolve the problem. Users should first secure their phone connection before starting the account recovery process.

1. Disable call forwarding

Dial ##21# on your phone to deactivate call forwarding before attempting to recover the account.

Users should also check their phone settings and mobile network account for any unauthorised call or SMS forwarding.

2. Report the compromised account

Use WhatsApp’s official support channel for hacked or compromised accounts and submit a recovery request.

The form may ask whether you are a law enforcement officer. Regular users should select “No” and proceed.

Enter the phone number associated with the affected WhatsApp account and confirm the number when prompted.

Select the option indicating that your account has been hacked, then provide a brief explanation of what happened, including that you were logged out and can no longer access the account.

3. Provide your contact information

Complete the requested contact details and answer the additional questions in the form. If asked whether you are a lawyer or representing another person and this does not apply to you, select “No.”

Provide the account holder's full name and a valid email address. WhatsApp may use the email address to communicate updates about the recovery request.

Complete the required declaration and electronic signature before submitting the form.

4. Register the number again

After the recovery request is processed, the person who activated the account on another device may be logged out.

Once access is restored, reinstall or open WhatsApp on your phone and register the account using your original phone number.

WhatsApp will send a new verification code, which you should enter to complete the registration.

Users should never share their WhatsApp verification code or OTP with anyone, even if the person claims to be a friend, WhatsApp representative or mobile network employee.

For additional protection, users should also enable two-step verification on WhatsApp after regaining access to their account.
