Former media personality Evelyn Waithira Muithirania has joined the Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) after leaving the Jubilee Party, setting the stage for another attempt at the Murang’a County Woman Representative seat.

DCP leader Rigathi Gachagua announced her defection on Wednesday, November 4, after hosting her at his Wamunyoro residence, where they discussed her political ambitions and plans ahead of the next General Election.

In a statement shared on his social media platforms, Gachagua said Muithirania had expressed interest in contesting for the seat on a DCP ticket.

The former Deputy President described her as a veteran media personality and welcomed her decision to join the party, which is positioning itself to attract more members ahead of the 2027 polls.

Muithirania is not new to the Murang’a Woman Representative race. She contested the seat in the 2022 General Election on a Jubilee Party ticket, finishing second behind United Democratic Alliance (UDA) candidate Betty Maina.

Official election figures reported at the time show that Maina secured 278,443 votes, while Muithirania garnered 111,163 votes, making her one of the leading contenders in the county contest.

Her latest move to DCP signals her intention to return to the race, this time seeking the party's backing as she prepares for the next election.

Gachagua said he had assured her that the party would conduct free and fair nominations, giving interested aspirants an opportunity to compete for its ticket.

He also encouraged her to begin mobilising support within the party, particularly by taking part in the ongoing membership-registration drive.

According to Gachagua, DCP nominations are scheduled for March next year, meaning aspirants have several months to organise their campaigns and build support among party members.

The party leader's assurance comes as political parties begin preparing for the nomination processes that will determine candidates for various elective positions ahead of the 2027 General Election.

For Muithirania, the immediate task will be to establish herself within the new political outfit and convince members to support her bid during the party primaries.

Her previous performance in Murang’a gives her an established electoral record, although the upcoming contest will involve a fresh political environment, new party arrangements and potentially other aspirants seeking the same ticket.

Gachagua ended his announcement with the phrase “The future is green”, a reference to DCP's party identity, while welcoming Muithirania into the political outfit.

Her defection adds to the political activity surrounding the Murang’a Woman Representative seat as aspirants begin positioning themselves ahead of the next election.
