An Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) rally at Nairobi's Jacaranda Grounds descended into chaos on Saturday, October 31, after suspected goons stormed the venue, disrupting proceedings and forcing party leaders and supporters to flee for safety.

The incident occurred during a gathering organised to mark the conclusion of activities commemorating the first anniversary of the death of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.

The circumstances surrounding the disruption remained unclear, including the identity of the individuals involved and what triggered the confrontation.

According to accounts from the venue, tensions began building when some political aspirants attempted to access the main dais accompanied by their security personnel, sparking disagreements and confrontations.

The situation reportedly escalated when unfamiliar individuals made their way onto the stage, grabbed the microphone and interrupted proceedings as party leaders were introducing themselves to the crowd.

The disruption quickly spread across the venue, with confrontations breaking out as supporters struggled to establish what was happening.

As the situation deteriorated, some ODM leaders could be heard using the public address system to appeal for calm, urging thousands of supporters who had gathered at the grounds not to panic or run.

However, their appeals appeared insufficient to contain the growing tension, with sections of the crowd beginning to flee as confrontations intensified.

Police officers subsequently moved in to intervene and restore order, but the situation reportedly escalated into running battles, sending supporters scrambling for safety.

The sudden disruption brought the rally to a standstill, interrupting an event that had brought together party officials, supporters and political aspirants to honour the legacy of the late ODM leader.

Among the senior party officials who had attended the gathering were ODM Chairperson Gladys Wanga and Deputy Party Leader Simba Arati.

The two were among party leaders present as the party marked one year since Raila's death, with the gathering also providing an opportunity for ODM members to reflect on his political legacy and the future of the party.

The incident is likely to raise fresh questions about security arrangements at political gatherings, particularly those attracting large crowds and competing political interests.

It also exposes the tensions that can emerge within political formations as aspirants and leaders seek visibility and influence during public events.

It was not immediately established whether anyone had been injured or arrested during the confrontation, while the exact circumstances surrounding the alleged entry of the disruptive individuals onto the stage remained unclear.

The party had yet to issue a comprehensive statement explaining the events or identifying those responsible for disrupting the gathering.

The incident overshadowed the commemorative rally, turning what was intended to be a gathering in honour of Raila Odinga into scenes of confusion, confrontation and panic.

Further details are expected as authorities and party officials establish what led to the disruption.
