Kenya Power has launched investigations after an act of vandalism caused the collapse of a transmission tower along the Naivasha-Juja 132kV double-circuit line, disrupting electricity supply through the Ruaraka Substation.
According to Kenya Power, the incident occurred at approximately 3:00 a.m., with the collapse affecting electricity supply to customers served through the substation.
The utility company said its teams immediately rerouted power through alternative substations, restoring electricity to all affected customers by 4:30 a.m.
Kenya Power said items recovered at the scene indicated that the vandals were present when the transmission tower collapsed.
The company’s security team, working together with the police, has commenced investigations into the incident, while transmission and airmobile teams have begun restoration works on the damaged infrastructure.
Kenya Power condemned the vandalism of electricity infrastructure, warning that such acts not only disrupt power supply but also pose a threat to public safety and cause significant financial losses.
The company said it had recorded a 200 per cent increase in vandalism incidents over the past three months, during which 37 transformers were vandalised.
“Vandalism has become one of the biggest threats to the reliability and sustainability of our electricity network,” Kenya Power said.
The utility added that the rising number of incidents highlighted the need for stronger and coordinated measures to protect critical electricity infrastructure and safeguard investments in the power network.
Kenya Power has urged members of the public to report suspicious activities around electricity installations to the nearest police station or directly to the company.
The utility said protecting electricity infrastructure was a shared responsibility between the company, security agencies and the public.
