Former President Uhuru Kenyatta has backed the handover of the Jubilee Party chairmanship following a High Court ruling on the leadership of retired presidents.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, September 15,Uhuru says he respects Justice Lawrence Mugambi’s ruling upholding Section 6 of the Presidential Retirement Benefits Act, which provides for the transition of retired presidents from formal party leadership.
The office said the delayed handover was caused by an internal dispute that required legal clarity and was not due to Kenyatta’s refusal to step aside.
Kenyatta has now said he is ready for the handover to take place in line with the Jubilee Party constitution and the law.
The former President also welcomed the ruling, saying it gives the party an opportunity to move ahead and allow a new generation of leaders to take charge.
The statement comes as Jubilee moves to resolve the long-running leadership issue following the court’s decision.
