Three people lost their lives and another was injured following a tragic helicopter crash in the Chatsworth neighbourhood of Los Angeles, authorities reported. The incident occurred when the helicopter plummeted between two commercial buildings, causing a scene of devastation and chaos. The Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) responded swiftly to the emergency, with Fire Captain Branden Silverman providing updates on the situation.
Upon arrival, LAFD personnel assessed four individuals at the crash site. Tragically, three of these individuals were pronounced dead at the scene, while the fourth was transported to a local hospital. The condition of the injured person remains unknown. Among the deceased was a pedestrian who happened to be in a parking lot when the helicopter crashed. Police officers bravely pulled this victim away from the fire area, but paramedics later pronounced the person dead.
The exact number of people aboard the helicopter at the time of the crash remains unclear, as does the status of the other victims, whether they were passengers or bystanders on the ground. The crash occurred just hours after another fatal incident in the same area of Chatsworth, located in the San Fernando Valley north of central Los Angeles. In that earlier incident, an SUV collided with a Metro bus, resulting in three fatalities and six injuries. The LAFD has stated that it is not immediately clear if there is any connection between the two tragic events.
A total of 56 firefighters responded to the helicopter crash, working diligently to extinguish the flames that had spread to four vehicles. Fortunately, no buildings were damaged by the fire, although the blaze did affect four vehicles and two storage containers. Captain Silverman noted that when emergency crews arrived, the helicopter was already engulfed in flames, complicating the search and rescue efforts.
Authorities have yet to determine the make or model of the helicopter or its origin. Captain Silverman declined to confirm whether the aircraft was a news helicopter, stating that investigators had not yet established that information.
