Safaricom launched a Family Share plan on Monday, October 26, that lets Home Fibre customers share mobile data or voice minutes with up to five family members on a single bill, as the telecom giant tries to deepen its hold on households.
The plan combines home internet and mobile connectivity under one package. The entry-level plan costs Sh3,749 a month and offers fibre speeds of 40 Mbps with a choice of either 750 voice minutes or 14 GB of mobile data to be shared among the five users. It is open to both new and existing Home Fibre customers, and tops out at Sh13,999 a month for the Diamond tier, which has speeds of up to 500 Mbps.
Sylvia Anampiu, Safaricom’s director for fixed home and enterprise, said the initiative aims to give customers more value and affordable connectivity. Safaricom Chief Consumer Business Officer Fawzia Ali said it is meant to keep customers connected at home and on the move. The plan is part of the company’s Pata More programme, which has already given Home Fibre customers faster speeds at no extra cost.
For households, the cost of the extra benefit is modest. The entry-level Bronze plan costs Sh2,999 as a stand-alone fibre subscription, so Family Share adds Sh750 a month. A family that currently buys separate bundles for relatives may find it cheaper to put everything on a single bill. Customers can sign up through the My OneApp, by dialling *400#, or at Safaricom shops and authorised dealers.
The launch comes as Safaricom pushes to bring more homes onto its fibre network. It says active fibre-to-the-home customers have risen 27 percent, and the share of connected homes with active subscriptions has climbed to 71 percent from 66.8 percent. Analysts say bundling mobile and fixed services helps operators retain customers in a competitive home broadband market, where rivals also offer fibre and wireless internet.
Safaricom has sold a Family Share add-on since at least 2023, which offered a bundle of data, minutes and text messages. The new plan revamps the offer, and it replaces the bundle of data, minutes and SMS with a choice of either minutes or data.
