President William Ruto says the government will spend KSh28 billion on housing and infrastructure projects in Migori County. This substantial investment is part of the government's broader initiative to enhance living conditions and economic opportunities in the region. The money will go towards 8,000 housing units, 19 modern markets and hostels for 8,000 students in Rongo University, TVETs and KMTC. These projects are expected to significantly improve the quality of life for residents and provide essential services for the growing population.
Government investment in Migori County
Ruto announced on Wednesday, 16th September, as he began his development tour of Migori County. During this tour, he emphasized the importance of infrastructure development in fostering economic growth and creating job opportunities for the youth. He said the housing programme is also creating jobs for young people. This initiative is not only about providing shelter but also about empowering the youth through employment in construction and related sectors.
According to the President, about 1.1 million young Kenyans are currently working on housing projects across the country. This statistic highlights the scale of the government's commitment to addressing youth unemployment through targeted development initiatives. “Across Kenya, this housing initiative is constructing 300,000 homes, 600 fresh produce markets, and facilities for 180,000 students,” Ruto said, showcasing the extensive reach and impact of the housing programme nationwide.
Youth employment through housing projects
In addition to housing, the President also launched the construction of the KSh2.25 billion Rapogi-Kanyawanga Road, a critical infrastructure project aimed at improving connectivity within the region. This road is expected to facilitate easier movement of goods and people, thereby boosting local commerce. He is expected to inspect the ongoing Stella-Gogo Road in Uriri Sub-County, further demonstrating his commitment to enhancing transportation infrastructure in Migori.

He added that KSh2.3 billion had been allocated this financial year to improve electricity connectivity in Migori, a vital component for supporting both residential and commercial activities. These projects will improve access to housing, roads, markets and other public facilities while giving young people and local communities more opportunities to earn a living. The focus on electricity connectivity is particularly important, as reliable power supply is essential for economic activities and improving the overall standard of living.
