Police in southeastern Nigeria are investigating the discovery of 28 human skulls and other bones in suspected criminal camps in Abia State.
The remains were recovered from the Umuaku and Nneato forests on Saturday during a security operation in Umunneochi.
Police spokeswoman Maureen Chinaka said officers raided the camps after receiving intelligence about suspected criminal activities.
The suspects reportedly fled as police arrived, after which the camps were dismantled.
Authorities believe the remains may be those of people who were kidnapped, but investigations are continuing to establish the identities of the victims and the circumstances of their deaths.
Police have since stepped up surveillance in the forests and are pursuing the suspects who escaped during the operation.
