The Kenya Maritime Authority (KMA) hosted a significant meeting on May 6, 2025, at its headquarters in Mombasa, welcoming the new Principal Secretary of the State Department of Shipping and Maritime Affairs, Aden Millah. This meeting marked an important step in fostering collaboration between the government and the maritime sector, which is crucial for Kenya's economic growth and development. The visit was part of Mr. Millah's familiarization tour, aimed at understanding the operations and challenges faced by key maritime institutions in the country.

Upon his arrival, Mr. Millah was warmly received by KMA's acting Director General, Isaiah Nakoru. Mr. Nakoru expressed confidence in the authority's workforce, emphasizing their readiness to support the new PS in achieving the authority's objectives. "KMA has a strong team and I believe we can deliver quality services to the people," Mr. Nakoru stated, highlighting the agency's commitment to excellence.

The meeting provided an opportunity for the KMA leadership to present their strategic plan, which aligns with the government's Bottom-up Economic Agenda. This agenda focuses on creating job opportunities, particularly for seafarers and the youth, thereby addressing unemployment and fostering economic empowerment. The authority's initiatives are designed to enhance maritime safety, environmental protection, and the development of maritime transport services, which are vital components of Kenya's maritime governance framework.

During his address to the KMA board and senior management, PS Millah underscored the critical role that KMA plays in the nation's maritime sector. He acknowledged the authority's efforts in promoting maritime safety and environmental stewardship, which are essential for sustainable development. Mr. Millah also engaged with the leadership team to discuss the progress of key initiatives, ensuring that they are on track to meet both national and international standards.

Reaffirming the government's commitment, Mr. Millah assured the KMA of continued support and resources necessary for its operations. "Work for the benefit of the country and people," he urged, pledging his support to the authority's endeavors. This commitment is expected to bolster KMA's capacity to implement its strategic goals effectively.

The meeting concluded with a mutual understanding of the importance of collaboration between the government and maritime stakeholders. As Kenya continues to position itself as a maritime hub in the region, the partnership between the State Department of Shipping and Maritime Affairs and the Kenya Maritime Authority is poised to drive significant advancements in the sector.
