Australian all-rounder Glenn Maxwell has announced his retirement from international cricket at the age of 38, bringing an end to a 14-year career in which he helped the country win three World Cup titles.

Maxwell confirmed his decision on Tuesday, November 3, during an appearance on The Final Word cricket podcast, where he revealed that he would also step away from domestic 50-over and four-day cricket with Victoria.

The announcement marks his departure from Australia's T20 international setup, having previously retired from One-Day International (ODI) cricket in June 2025.

Maxwell explained that he wanted to focus on managing his fitness and preserving his body for the remaining years of his professional career.

"It's probably a time where I probably need to spend a little bit more time investing in the body to make sure I can get through the remaining couple of tournaments I've got in my career," he said.

The decision followed Australia's announcement of their squad for the upcoming T20 series against England, with Maxwell missing out as selectors look towards younger players ahead of future international competitions.

He admitted that he had hoped to receive a farewell appearance at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) during the series but understood Australia's decision to prioritise the next generation.

"There was, I suppose, a small hope or discussion that I might have been able to potentially get a send-off game at the MCG, but I can completely understand the direction they're going with this squad," Maxwell said.

Across his international career, Maxwell represented Australia in 286 matches, comprising seven Tests, 149 ODIs and 130 T20 Internationals.

He accumulated 7,226 runs and claimed 136 wickets across the three formats, establishing himself as one of Australia's most versatile limited-overs players.

His international career was defined by Australia's success in major tournaments, having been part of the squads that won the 2015 and 2023 ODI World Cups and the 2021 T20 World Cup.

Maxwell's most memorable individual performance came during the 2023 ODI World Cup in India, when he scored an unbeaten 201 off 128 deliveries against Afghanistan to guide Australia to a remarkable three-wicket victory.
Australia were struggling at 91 for seven while chasing 292 when Maxwell produced an extraordinary innings, striking 21 fours and 10 sixes despite battling severe cramps.

The knock made him the first Australian batter to score a double century in men's ODI cricket and one of only a handful of players to achieve the feat.

He also recorded the fastest century in men's ODI World Cup history at the time, reaching three figures off just 40 balls against the Netherlands during the same tournament.

In T20 internationals, Maxwell scored 2,897 runs at a strike rate of 154.42, including five centuries, placing him alongside India's Rohit Sharma as the only players to have reached five T20I hundreds.

He also contributed 51 wickets in the format, underlining his importance as an all-rounder in Australia's white-ball setup.

His final appearance for Australia came against Oman during the 2026 T20 World Cup in February, where he claimed two wickets for 13 runs but was not required to bat.

Despite ending his international and state cricket careers, Maxwell will continue playing franchise cricket, including for the Melbourne Stars in Australia's Big Bash League (BBL), where he is contracted until the 2027-28 season.

His retirement closes a significant chapter in Australian cricket, with the 38-year-old leaving behind a reputation for explosive batting, inventive stroke play and match-winning performances on the biggest stage.
