Athletics Kenya will take its 2026/27 cross-country circuit to Kimilili, Bungoma County, on Saturday, November 7, for the second meeting of the season at Amutala Stadium.
The competition will bring together senior and junior athletes seeking to establish themselves in the early stages of the cross-country campaign, following the opening meeting held at Machakos Teachers Training College on October 24.
The Kimilili meeting will feature senior men’s and women’s 10km races, Under-20 men’s 8km and women’s 6km contests, alongside Under-18 boys’ 6km and girls’ 4km races. The programme will also include 2km races for both men and women.
The different categories will provide competition for athletes across various age groups, with the senior races offering the longest distances on the programme. The junior contests will also give younger runners an opportunity to compete as the season progresses.
Athletics Kenya has encouraged athletes to turn out in large numbers and register through the federation’s website ahead of the competition.
Financial incentives will also be available across the different categories, with senior race winners set to receive KSh50,000 each. Runners-up will earn KSh40,000, while third-place finishers will take home KSh25,000, with prize money extending to athletes finishing tenth.
In the Under-20 category, winners will pocket KSh30,000, while second and third-place finishers will receive KSh20,000 and KSh15,000, respectively.
The Under-18 and 2km races will offer KSh10,000 to winners, KSh8,000 to runners-up and KSh6,000 to athletes finishing third.
The Kimilili competition follows an opening meeting in Machakos that attracted athletes across the senior and junior categories, producing several notable performances.
Fredrick Chebii won the senior men’s 10km race in 29:55.8, finishing ahead of Kenneth Kiprono Lagat, who clocked 30:33.7, and Peter Makau Mutie, who settled for third place in 30:35.3.
Emmaculate Jepkosgei claimed the senior women’s 10km title in 33:46.7, ahead of Betty Chelangat, who finished in 34:32.6, and Miriam Chemutai Kibet, who clocked 34:44.1.
In the junior races, Cynthia Chepkurui won the Under-20 women’s 6km contest in 20:20.4, while Edwin Elkana claimed the men’s 8km title in 24:01.7.
Faith Cherotich and Jairus Byegon also emerged victorious in the Under-18 girls’ and boys’ 4km races, respectively.
The second meeting in Kimilili will give athletes another opportunity to compete for honours and prize money while building momentum in the 2026/27 cross-country circuit.
With several categories on the programme, attention will be on whether the Machakos winners can maintain their early-season form or new contenders will emerge when the series moves to Bungoma County.
