New Zealand opener Devon Conway has been ruled out of the first One-Day International (ODI) against India after suffering a concussion in a training collision with teammate Matt Henry at Eden Park in Auckland on Tuesday, November 3.

The two players collided while attempting to catch an aerial ball during the Black Caps’ fielding practice ahead of Wednesday’s series opener, forcing medical staff to intervene.

New Zealand Cricket (NZC) confirmed that both players received immediate medical attention at the training venue and underwent head injury assessments. Conway was subsequently taken to hospital for further examination, where a concussion was confirmed.

The injury rules Conway out of the opening match, with his availability for the remaining fixtures yet to be determined as the team continues to monitor his recovery.

New Zealand captain Mitchell Santner indicated that wicketkeeper-batter Tim Seifert was likely to replace Conway in the playing XI, describing the change as a direct swap.

Santner said the incident was an unfortunate accident and expressed concern over the severity of the collision. He also confirmed that Henry appeared to be doing well following his assessment, although the fast bowler would remain under observation.

NZC said both players would continue to be monitored, with further updates on their involvement in the five-match ODI series to be provided in due course.

Conway’s absence presents a setback for New Zealand’s batting plans, given his experience at the top of the order and his role in the team’s limited-overs setup. His withdrawal also comes as the hosts contend with other injury concerns ahead of the series.

New Zealand are also dealing with the absence of Mark Chapman and Rachin Ravindra, adding to the selection challenges facing Santner and head coach Rob Walter as they prepare to face India.

The injury setback comes after New Zealand lost the preceding five-match T20 International series 3-2, although the Black Caps recovered from an early deficit to win the final two matches.

The opening ODI is scheduled for Wednesday, November 4, at Eden Park, where New Zealand will seek a strong start to the 50-over series against the visitors.

The remaining matches will be played in Wellington, Hamilton and Mount Maunganui as the two sides contest the five-match series.
