The Ghana Football Association has agreed to terminate the contract of Black Stars head coach Carlos Queiroz following a poor start to the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

The decision comes after Ghana lost their opening two qualifying matches, suffering a 2-0 defeat to Ivory Coast before losing 4-2 to Gambia.

The results leave Ghana bottom of Group C and facing the possibility of missing out on a second consecutive AFCON tournament.

In a statement, the Ghana Football Association said ending its professional relationship with Queiroz at this stage was “the best decision for the country”.

Queiroz, 73, said he joined Ghana with the aim of helping build a strong future for the Black Stars, but recent performances and the prevailing conditions contributed to the decision to end his tenure.

“I am leaving with respect, gratitude and pride,” Queiroz said.

The Portuguese coach added that Ghana has the talent to succeed, saying the current generation could achieve great things with support, unity and the right environment.

Queiroz's latest spell lasted only one month and included the opening two matches of the 2027 AFCON qualifiers.

Across his two spells in charge of the Black Stars, he oversaw seven matches, recording one win, two draws and four defeats.

During his tenure, Ghana struggled to create scoring opportunities while also conceding several goals, despite Queiroz's reputation for favouring a defensive approach.
