Heavy rains pounding Kenya’s coastal region have triggered flooding in Tana River County, displacing 302 households and affecting thousands of others after two dams in Tana Delta overflowed.

The Kenya Red Cross Society said the rising water levels at Tulu and Minjila dams had sent floodwaters into nearby villages and homes, leaving 3,156 additional households affected.

The situation has also raised concern in neighbouring Lamu County, where some homes in Hindi and Witu have started experiencing flooding as the rains continue.

According to the humanitarian organisation, relief efforts are underway, with teams on the ground assessing the situation and supporting families affected by the rising waters.

So far, 175 of the 302 displaced households have received emergency assistance from the county and national governments. The support includes food supplies, tarpaulins and blankets to help families cope with the effects of the flooding.

The remaining displaced households are expected to receive assistance as the response operation continues.

The flooding has disrupted the lives of families forced to leave their homes, while the thousands of other affected households face the risk of further damage as water levels remain a concern.

The Kenya Red Cross said its teams were working alongside other partners to assess the needs of affected communities and coordinate assistance.

The organisation added that it would remain on the ground as the rains persist, monitoring the situation and helping families access essential support.

The latest flooding highlights the risks facing communities in low-lying areas of the Coast region during periods of heavy rainfall, particularly where overflowing water bodies can quickly inundate homes and settlements.

With homes in parts of Lamu also beginning to flood, humanitarian teams are continuing to monitor developments and assess whether more families will require assistance.

Authorities and response agencies are expected to maintain relief operations as they work to reach those who have not yet received support.
