The start of the 2026/27 FKF Premier League season has been postponed indefinitely, adding to growing uncertainty around the new campaign.
The league was scheduled to kick off on Saturday, September 19, after two previous postponements. However, Football Kenya Federation (FKF) informed clubs late Friday night that the opening of the season had been called off once again.
The latest delay follows a ruling by the High Court in Murang’a that halted the start of the league pending the resolution of a dispute involving promotion and relegation.
The court order followed an application by Evans Nduta, who is challenging the implementation of the FKF 2025 regulations and has sought to have a playoff between Kariobangi Sharks and Mombasa United played before the new season begins.
Lady Justice Dorah Chepkwony directed that the matter be heard on September 24. FKF President Hussein Mohammed and the federation's Head of Leagues and Competitions, Frank Ogolla, have also been ordered to appear in court on September 22 following contempt proceedings.
Meanwhile, the High Court in Kiambu issued separate orders directing that Mombasa United be included in the 2026/27 league fixtures as the 18th team. The orders followed a case filed by the Center for Litigation Trust.
The developments have left clubs facing further uncertainty, with some teams already having travelled for matches that will now not take place. Shabana FC, for instance, were in Kirinyaga ahead of their scheduled fixture against Posta Rangers, while APS Bomet had travelled to Nairobi to face Mathare United.
The repeated postponements have also frustrated players who have spent weeks preparing for the new campaign.
Tusker FC captain and Harambee Stars' 2024 CHAN captain Abud Omar has criticised the latest disruption, saying the uncertainty is becoming increasingly frustrating for players.
“I’ve just woken up to the news that the league has been cancelled again, and honestly, it’s so frustrating,” Omar posted.
Omar warned that the continued uncertainty could have wider consequences for Kenyan football, particularly as neighbouring countries continue with their domestic competitions.
With court proceedings still ongoing and competing orders affecting the composition of the league, the date for the start of the 2026/27 FKF Premier League remains unclear.
