American singer Chris Brown has been sentenced to eight months in prison, suspended for 12 months, after pleading guilty to affray over an attack on music producer Abraham Diaw at a London nightclub in February 2023.

The 37-year-old received the sentence at Southwark Crown Court on Monday, October 26, 2026, meaning he will not immediately serve the prison term, subject to the conditions of his suspended sentence.

Judge Tony Baumgartner described the attack as “plainly dangerous”, warning that Brown’s commercial success would not earn him preferential treatment in court.

“The repeated use of a glass bottle in that way, especially aimed at the head, was plainly dangerous,” the judge said.

The case arose from an incident at Tape nightclub in Hanover Square, Mayfair, in the early hours of February 19, 2023, when Brown attacked Diaw with a tequila bottle during a confrontation on the dance floor.

CCTV footage presented in court showed Brown striking Diaw four times with the bottle, with two blows connecting with his head and another hitting his shoulder. Prosecutors said the attack continued as Diaw turned away and attempted to escape.

Diaw sustained head and knee injuries and received treatment at St Mary’s Hospital following the incident.

Brown’s vocal coach, Omololu Akinlolu, 40, was also sentenced over his role in the confrontation. He received four months in prison, suspended for 12 months. Both men were ordered to pay £1,500 in court costs.

The two men pleaded guilty to affray in July 2026 after initially denying more serious charges, including attempting to cause grievous bodily harm and assault occasioning actual bodily harm. Prosecutors dropped the additional charges following their guilty pleas.

Affray is an offence under English law involving the use or threat of unlawful violence in circumstances that would cause a person of reasonable firmness present at the scene to fear for their safety.

Brown was arrested in Manchester on May 15, 2025, after returning to the United Kingdom for a concert. His arrest initially raised uncertainty over his planned international tour, but he was later released on bail after agreeing to provide £5 million in security.

The sentencing concludes the criminal proceedings arising from the 2023 nightclub incident. Brown’s suspended prison term means he avoids immediate imprisonment, although the sentence remains in force during the 12-month suspension period.

The case adds to the singer’s history of legal troubles. In 2009, Brown pleaded guilty to assaulting his then-girlfriend, singer Rihanna, and was sentenced to five years of probation and community labour.

The latest ruling brings the London case to its sentencing stage, with Brown remaining subject to the court’s order for the duration of the suspension period.
