The Standard Group PLC has announced the resignation of Chief Executive Officer Chaacha Mwita, who will leave the media company on November 1, alongside his position as an executive director.
In a notice to shareholders and the general public, the board of directors said Mwita’s resignation would take effect on the first day of November, bringing his tenure as the head of one of Kenya’s major media organisations to an end.
The announcement was made pursuant to Paragraph 10 of the Thirteenth Schedule of the Capital Markets (Public Offers, Listings and Disclosures) Regulations, 2023, which governs disclosures by listed companies.
The board expressed appreciation for Mwita’s service, citing his dedication and contributions to the company during his time in leadership.
“The Board takes this opportunity to express its sincere appreciation to Mr. Chaacha for his dedication and invaluable contribution to the Company,” the notice stated.
The directors also wished him success in his future endeavours but did not provide further details about the circumstances surrounding his departure or identify a successor in the announcement.
Mwita’s exit comes months after he was confirmed as the company’s substantive Group Chief Executive Officer, effective April 1. He had served in an acting capacity since July 2025, following the resignation of his predecessor, Marion Gathoga-Mwangi.
His confirmation followed a board evaluation of his performance and a structured appointment process. At the time, the board said he had demonstrated the leadership capability, experience and integrity required to assume the position on a substantive basis.
Before becoming acting CEO, Mwita served as the Group’s Chief Executive Editor, overseeing content production and supporting the organisation’s editorial and operational strategy.
He brings extensive experience in journalism, communications, leadership and policy engagement. His professional background includes previous leadership roles at the Standard Group, Nation Media Group, the Aga Khan Foundation, the African Population and Health Research Centre and the Thomson Foundation.
His academic qualifications include a Bachelor of Education degree from the University of Nairobi, a postgraduate diploma in Mass Communication from the University of Nairobi’s School of Journalism and an MBA from the University of St Gallen in Switzerland.
The Standard Group operates several media platforms, including The Standard newspaper, KTN television stations, radio services and digital news platforms.
Mwita’s departure marks another leadership transition for the publicly listed media company, which has undergone executive changes in recent years as it navigates a changing media landscape.
