The Boxing Federation of Kenya (BFK) has named 40 boxers for a non-residential training camp as Kenya steps up preparations to host the 2026 Africa Boxing Championship in Nairobi from October 12 to 28.
The boxers have started training at the Mathare Police Depot, where they will compete for places in the final Kenyan team ahead of the continental tournament.
The championship will be held at the Kasarani Indoor Arena, with more than 20 countries expected to send teams to Nairobi for the continental competition.
The 40-member group brings together experienced campaigners and emerging boxers who will compete for places in the final Kenyan team. The technical team will assess their fitness, technical ability and overall readiness during the camp before settling on the final squad.
The camp comes days after BFK unveiled a 39-member national squad comprising 28 men and 11 women, with 19 of those selected receiving their first senior national-team call-ups.
The latest training group gives the technical team another opportunity to evaluate Kenya’s boxing talent as the country prepares for a major continental event on home soil.
Kenya’s preparations build on its experience hosting the Africa Zone Three Boxing Championships at the Kasarani Indoor Arena in 2025. Team Kenya finished second behind the Democratic Republic of Congo after collecting five gold, 10 silver and eight bronze medals.
The upcoming championships will give Kenyan boxers an opportunity to compete against opposition from across Africa on home soil, while giving BFK a chance to assess the depth of its national team.
The immediate focus is now on the Mathare camp, where the technical team will continue assessing the 40 boxers before the final team is confirmed.
Attention will then shift to Kenya’s home campaign when the continental championships get underway in Nairobi on October 12.
