A routine visit to Buruburu Police Station took an unexpected turn for Bernice Achieng, a 26-year-old woman, when she was arrested for allegedly attempting to smuggle bhang into the facility. Achieng had gone to the station with the intention of visiting her boyfriend, who is currently detained there. She brought with her a loaf of bread, which she requested the officers to deliver to him. However, the officers became suspicious of the unsealed package and decided to inspect it. Upon examination, they discovered five rolls of bhang and a matchbox cleverly concealed inside the loaf.
The officers then conducted a further search of Achieng's belongings, which led to the discovery of an additional seven rolls of bhang hidden in her jacket. This brought the total number of rolls recovered to 12. Achieng was immediately taken into custody, and the illegal substances were secured as evidence. She remains in police custody as authorities prepare to arraign her in court. The incident highlights the ongoing challenges law enforcement faces in curbing drug trafficking and the creative methods employed by individuals attempting to circumvent the law.
In a separate but related incident in Thika, police apprehended a suspected drug peddler in a dramatic chase. The suspect, identified as John Mwangi, also known by the alias “Bombay,” was reportedly riding a motorcycle with a female passenger through Kairi, Thika West. As they approached a police roadblock, Mwangi allegedly attempted to flee by accelerating past it. However, his escape was thwarted when he misjudged a speed bump near Ree Supermarket, causing the motorcycle to crash.
In the ensuing chaos, Mwangi's female passenger managed to blend into the crowd and evade capture, leaving him to face the consequences alone. A search of the crashed motorcycle revealed a significant haul of illegal drugs, with police recovering 300 rolls of bhang and an additional three kilograms wrapped in yellow polythene and strapped to the motorcycle seat. Mwangi was promptly arrested and is currently being held at Kimuchu Police Station. He is awaiting processing and arraignment on charges related to drug trafficking.
These incidents underscore the persistent issue of drug trafficking in Kenya and the lengths to which individuals will go to transport and distribute illegal substances. The police continue to intensify their efforts to combat this menace, employing roadblocks and thorough searches to intercept and apprehend those involved in the drug trade.
