Former Wajir Governor Ahmed Abdullahi has called on leaders from the Somali community to unite in support of ODM leader Raila Odinga in the upcoming 2022 general elections. Abdullahi emphasized that rallying behind Odinga would enable the community to address the myriad challenges they face both within and outside the Northern Kenya region. Speaking at the annual communal meeting of the Somali Degodia community held in Mombasa, Abdullahi highlighted the importance of having a unified national agenda and encouraged the community to align themselves with their counterparts in the Coast region.
The former governor underscored the significance of unity, peace, and tolerance among Kenyans as essential elements for fostering stability and progress in the country. "Our community and the people of the Coast region share common values and face similar challenges, so we need to unite and speak with one voice at the national level. I believe that time has come to do so," Abdullahi stated. His remarks come at a time when political alliances are being forged ahead of the elections, with various communities seeking to position themselves strategically in the national political landscape.
The Degodia community, which predominantly resides in Wajir and parts of Mandera County, has historically supported Raila Odinga in the past three general elections. Abdullahi reiterated the community's unwavering support for Odinga, whom he described as the most suitable candidate to succeed President Uhuru Kenyatta. "Just like the people of the Coast, we have been relentless in our support for Raila Odinga in his quest to clinch power. We will back him once again and hopefully propel him to the house on the hill," Abdullahi added.
The meeting also saw contributions from other leaders, including Mombasa Somali community chairman Mohamed Huri, who highlighted the challenges facing the Somali community despite their significant contributions to the socio-economic progress in the region. Huri's sentiments echoed Abdullahi's call for unity, emphasizing the need for collective action to overcome the obstacles hindering the community's development.
As the election season approaches, Abdullahi's appeal for unity and strategic political alignment reflects a broader trend among various Kenyan communities seeking to consolidate their influence and ensure their voices are heard on the national stage. The support for Raila Odinga by the Somali community, particularly the Degodia, underscores their commitment to a leader they believe can address their concerns and champion their interests at the national level.
