Public university lecturers are set to go on strike on October 2, 2026, after the Universities Academic Staff Union (UASU) issued a seven-day strike notice over delays in implementing their collective bargaining agreement.
In a notice dated September 24, UASU Secretary General Dr. Constantine Wasonga Opiyo said union members in all public universities and constituent colleges would withdraw their services until the issues raised are resolved.
The notice was addressed to council chairs of public universities and constituent colleges across the country.
It was also copied to the Cabinet Secretaries for Labour and Social Protection and Education, all public university vice-chancellors, principals of constituent colleges, UASU chapter secretaries and the union’s lawyers, Koceyo & Company Advocates.
UASU cited delays in negotiating, concluding, registering and implementing the 2025–2029 Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) as a key reason for the planned strike.
The union also faulted the Ministries of Education and National Treasury for failing to commit funds to support the agreement.
Another concern raised was the failure to include negotiated clauses in the generic human resource instruments for public universities before they are submitted to the Public Service Commission for approval.
Wasonga said lecturers would remain off duty from October 2 until the three issues outlined in the notice are addressed.
