A suspected armed robber was fatally shot by police officers following a robbery incident along Juja Road in Nairobi on Saturday evening.
The incident occurred after officers from Pangani Police Station, who were conducting routine patrols within the Nairobi Region, spotted two men armed with knives attacking and robbing a woman of her personal belongings.
According to the National Police Service (NPS), the officers immediately moved in to stop the robbery, forcing the two suspects to abandon their mission and flee towards Kosovo Slums.
The officers pursued the suspects and managed to catch up with them shortly afterwards.
However, the situation reportedly escalated when one of the suspects drew a knife and attempted to stab an officer as the police moved to arrest them.
Faced with what police described as an imminent threat to his life, the officer discharged his firearm, fatally injuring the suspect.
The second suspect was also apprehended during the operation, although police did not immediately provide further details regarding his identity or whether he had been formally charged.
A subsequent search conducted at the scene led to the recovery of several items believed to have been used in the robbery.
These included a mini pistol, a knife and a mobile phone that had allegedly been stolen from the female victim.
The recovery of the items is expected to form part of investigations into the incident and the suspects' possible involvement in other criminal activities within the area.
The National Police Service said the operation demonstrated the importance of police patrols and rapid response in preventing criminal activities and protecting members of the public.
The incident comes amid renewed calls for vigilance and cooperation between law enforcement agencies and communities as the country approaches the end of the year.
Police have warned that robbery, theft and other opportunistic crimes tend to increase during this period, urging Kenyans to remain alert, particularly when moving around busy streets and residential neighbourhoods.
Members of the public have also been encouraged to report suspicious individuals, activities or movements to the nearest police station to facilitate timely intervention by security agencies.
The National Police Service reiterated its commitment to sustaining targeted security operations, routine patrols and prompt responses to reported criminal incidents as part of broader efforts to maintain public safety.
Residents have been urged to share information that could assist security agencies in preventing crime through the emergency toll-free numbers 911 and 999.
The public can also report criminal activities through the Directorate of Criminal Investigations' Fichua Kwa DCI hotline on 0800 722 203 or via WhatsApp on 0709 570 000.
Police say information provided by members of the public remains critical in identifying criminal networks, disrupting planned offences and ensuring the safety of communities.
