Thousands of tourists are descending upon the coastal city of Mombasa as the 11th Tong ll-Moo-Do Championships commence, bringing a significant boost to the local tourism industry. The event, which has attracted participants and fans from around the globe, is expected to significantly impact the region's economy. Clarence Mwakio, the president of the Tong ll-Moo-Do Federation, noted that in addition to the competing teams, thousands of fans have arrived in the county to support their respective teams, contributing to the vibrant atmosphere.

Mwakio highlighted the positive implications for the hospitality sector, predicting a surge in bed occupancy rates as the influx of visitors coincides with the festive season. "Apart from playing Tong ll-Moo-Do, players also have a program to visit different tourist destinations such as Tsavo National Park, Masai Mara, Amboseli alongside other areas of interest," he said. This integration of sports and tourism is expected to showcase Kenya's rich cultural and natural heritage to the international visitors.

Addressing the media earlier this week at Light International, Mwakio expressed gratitude for the government's support in facilitating the championships. "The government, through its state department of sports, has pledged to release a total of Sh100 million in support of the event," he stated. The federation had initially estimated a budget of Sh230 million to host the championships, with the remaining funds anticipated to come from sponsorships and other sources.

The two-week event is set to kick off on Saturday, December 09, 2023, at the Light International venue. With forty countries confirming participation, the event promises to be a showcase of international martial arts talent. Some teams have already arrived in Mombasa, preparing for the intense competition ahead. Kenya's team, Jasiri, is currently in training at Light International, determined to defend its title. However, they are expected to face stiff competition from other teams eager to claim the championship.

The Tong ll-Moo-Do Championships not only highlight the sport's growing popularity but also underscore Mombasa's capacity to host international events. The championships are a testament to the city's strategic importance as a hub for cultural and sporting events, further cementing its reputation as a premier tourist destination. As the event unfolds, it is anticipated to leave a lasting legacy, enhancing both the sport and the region's tourism profile.
