Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Vice President McDonald Mariga has been officially expelled from his position and removed from membership in the federation's National Executive Committee (NEC) during a Special General Meeting held in Meru.
The meeting also resolved to remove six other NEC members representing various regions and constituencies, in a major shake-up of the federation's leadership.
Those removed include Dan Shikanda, who represented Nairobi East; Robert Macharia of Central; Gabriel Mghendi of the Coast region; Bernard Lagat of Lower Rift Valley; Kalle Collins of Nyanza; and Woman Representative Violet Kerubo.
The resolutions mark a significant development in the ongoing leadership dispute within FKF, with the meeting placing the future of several senior federation officials in question.
Mariga's removal is particularly significant given his position as deputy to FKF President Hussein Mohammed and his role in the federation's leadership.
The decisions are expected to trigger further debate over the governance of Kenyan football, particularly regarding the procedures followed in removing elected officials and the implications for the federation's administration.
The meeting comes amid growing tensions within FKF, with disagreements over leadership, accountability and the management of the federation having exposed divisions among its officials and delegates.
However, the proceedings were overshadowed by scenes of chaos at the Three Steers Hotel in Meru, where the meeting was being held.
The gathering descended into disorder, with confrontations and disruption reported as delegates and other participants contested developments surrounding the meeting.
Police were forced to intervene as tensions escalated, with teargas fired during the unrest, disrupting proceedings and raising questions about the security arrangements at the venue.
The chaotic scenes came against the backdrop of an increasingly bitter leadership dispute that has threatened to destabilise the federation at a time when Kenyan football is preparing for major regional and continental assignments.
The latest changes now leave FKF facing the challenge of restoring stability, addressing concerns over its internal governance and ensuring that the decisions reached at the meeting are implemented in accordance with the federation's constitution and applicable football regulations.
