Three suspects have been arrested over the alleged killing of a 45-year-old man in Kadibuoro Village, Kanyiriema Location, Rangwe Sub-County, Homa Bay County.

The suspects include the deceased's 42-year-old wife, Rose Nyakundi, her 24-year-old son and a 36-year-old man who police suspect was hired from the village. Police allege that the three were involved in the killing of John Nyakundi Okoko on Sunday night.

Okoko was allegedly killed inside his house before his body was moved and dumped in a thicket about one kilometre from his home. His wife later reported the matter at Ndiru Police Station, claiming that Okoko had left home to collect rice plants for his livestock before he was killed.

Officers accompanied her to the area where the body was found before returning to the family home. Police said they found blood stains on the matrimonial bed and a bedroom wall.

The investigation unravels

The discovery of blood stains inside the house contradicted the account given by the deceased's wife, leading detectives to treat the reported disappearance as a possible domestic homicide. Investigators will rely on forensic analysis of the blood evidence, the postmortem examination and witness statements from the village to build the case.

Domestic violence remains a significant driver of homicide in Kenya, with the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics reporting that a substantial share of murders occur within families or intimate relationships. Financial disputes, infidelity suspicions and long-running family conflicts are among the most common triggers cited in police reports.

What happens next

The three suspects remain in custody as detectives from Rangwe Sub-County complete their investigations ahead of arraignment. If charged with murder, they will face the High Court, where bail is rarely granted. The body of the deceased is at a local mortuary awaiting postmortem.
