President William Ruto has awarded a university charter to International Leadership University (ILU), formally recognising the institution as a fully chartered university in Kenya.
The charter was presented during a ceremony held at State House, Nairobi, on Thursday, November 5, 2026, attended by Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba, officials from the Ministry of Education and the university's leadership.
The recognition marks another milestone in the government's efforts to expand access to higher education and create more opportunities for young people seeking university education.
In awarding the charter, Ruto said the recognition would contribute to the advancement of university education in Kenya.
The process of granting university charters is governed by the Universities Act, which provides the legal framework for the establishment, accreditation and recognition of universities in the country.
A charter formally establishes an institution's status as a university and provides the legal and governance framework under which it operates.
International Leadership University's Chancellor, Professor Kivutha Kibwana, welcomed the recognition, describing it as a major achievement for the institution.
Kibwana said the milestone reflected the university's development and governance culture, which he noted had matured over the years since its establishment in 1980.
The ceremony brought together several university officials, including Board of Trustees Chairperson Justice Daniel Musinga, Council Chairperson Engineer Peter Kahoro and Vice-Chancellor Professor Timothy Kirui.
The university was also presented with key instruments associated with its new status, including the official mace, logo, seal and accreditation report.
These instruments represent the institution's authority, identity and governance framework, while the accreditation report outlines its approved academic programmes and provides guidance on maintaining the required standards.
The charter comes at a time when Kenya continues to experience growing demand for university education, with thousands of young people seeking opportunities to pursue higher learning after completing secondary school and other training programmes.
The government has been emphasising the need to increase access while ensuring that universities provide quality teaching, relevant academic programmes and research that responds to the country's development needs.
The award adds International Leadership University to Kenya's recognised chartered universities, expanding the country's higher education landscape.
The institution will now be expected to maintain the standards required of chartered universities while strengthening its academic programmes, governance and contribution to society.
The ceremony underscores the role of higher education institutions in developing skills, supporting research and preparing graduates to address challenges facing communities and the wider economy.
