Police Inspector Kenneth Kipkemboi Sang is facing a murder charge over the killing of Dr Victoria Nthunya Mutiso, with the prosecution signalling its intention to challenge his release on bail as the case enters the court process.

Sang was presented before the Milimani High Court, where he denied responsibility for the July 29, 2026 killing of the doctor in Kilimani, Nairobi. His plea came after detectives arrested him in Eldoret following a manhunt linked to investigations into two high-profile killings.

The prosecution told the court that it would oppose his release on bail and requested an opportunity to submit an affidavit setting out the reasons for its position.

The inspector was subsequently detained at Industrial Area Remand Prison as the court awaits the next steps in the bail proceedings. The matter is scheduled to return to court on November 30, 2026.

Dr Mutiso was shot dead along Mawensi Road on the morning of July 29, an incident that prompted investigations by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).

Sang’s arrest came after detectives traced him to Eldoret, where he had been living while wanted in connection with the murders of Dr Mutiso and prominent Nairobi lawyer Mathew Kyalo Mbobu.

The officer was intercepted along Uganda Road in Eldoret’s Central Business District while driving a silver Toyota Fielder, registration number KCM 508L. Investigators said he was reportedly attempting to sell the vehicle to raise money for his upkeep.

His arrest brought an end to the search for a suspect who had remained outside police custody as detectives pursued leads in the two investigations.

Mbobu was also murdered in Nairobi, with his killing forming part of the investigations that led detectives to Sang. However, the two murder cases remain separate matters, and the latest charge before the Milimani High Court concerns Dr Mutiso’s death.

Sang’s arraignment adds another development to the investigation, which has seen several other suspects face charges over Dr Mutiso’s murder. Those previously named by the DCI include Rose Mbithe Mulwa, her children Chris and Angela Mulwa, and police constables Julius Kipkoech Cheruiyot and Kennedy Kipkemoi Borboroi.

With the prosecution preparing to oppose bail, the next court proceedings will determine the direction of Sang’s application for release as the murder case moves forward.
