Former President Uhuru Kenyatta has claimed that the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga won the 2022 presidential election, suggesting that the outcome was manipulated to hand President William Ruto victory.
Speaking during a Jubilee Party function on Tuesday, September 22, Uhuru said he remained convinced that Odinga had won the election, despite the Supreme Court upholding Ruto’s victory.
“Mimi hadi wa leo najua Raila ndiye alishinda uchaguzi wa 2022,” Uhuru said, insisting that he would continue speaking his truth.
The former President also dismissed claims that he had failed to support Odinga’s presidential bid, questioning the circumstances surrounding the election results.
Uhuru, who served as president from 2013 to 2022, said his administration had peacefully handed over power after the Supreme Court decision and that he had no intention of engaging in political quarrels with his critics.
He called for mutual respect among political leaders, an end to corruption and improved service delivery to Kenyans.
The remarks came as Uhuru announced plans to step aside as Jubilee Party leader and urged members to support younger leaders as the party prepares for the next political phase.
He asked Jubilee members to receive former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i as his successor at the party’s leadership, pending the formal National Delegates Convention.
Matiang’i thanked Uhuru for his leadership and pledged to work towards maintaining a united Jubilee Party while collaborating with other like-minded political actors.
The 2022 presidential election was won by William Ruto, with the Supreme Court dismissing a petition challenging the results on September 5, 2022.
Uhuru’s latest remarks represent his personal assertion about the election outcome, rather than a change to the court’s determination.
