Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Migos Ogamba has called for stronger investment in science and research, saying universities have a key role to play in producing knowledge for the country.
Speaking during the University of Nairobi’s 75th graduation ceremony on Friday,18th September Ogamba said universities should not only train students but also help find solutions to challenges facing society.
“Universities are meant to shape the minds and generate knowledge, and as we celebrate the achievements of these graduates, we hope the university has equipped them with the knowledge, skills and experience they need to make a difference,” Ogamba said.
He said Kenya needs graduates who can think critically and create opportunities instead of only looking for employment.
Ogamba added that the government is investing in science and technology and wants to strengthen research in universities.
The CS also addressed higher education funding, saying the Tertiary Placement and Funding Bill is currently under review in Parliament.
He said the government hopes the proposed framework will be fully funded to enable students to pursue courses of their choice.
Ogamba also reassured first-year students that their education would not be interrupted by the ongoing transition in the funding system and urged universities to ensure students do not miss opportunities during the transition.
He later congratulated the graduates and described the ceremony as a moment of celebration and reflection.
