The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has embarked on a significant initiative aimed at enhancing road safety and elevating the standards of the public transport sector in Kenya. This initiative, a nationwide training programme for Public Service Vehicle (PSV) drivers and operators, commenced on Monday, September 21, 2026. The programme's initial phase targets key regions including Voi, Mombasa, and Garissa, where the first groups of participants are engaged in a comprehensive four-day training course offered at no cost.
In a statement, NTSA emphasized that the training is designed to refine driving practices, elevate service standards, and significantly reduce road accidents. The programme also aims to equip operators with the skills necessary to manage their businesses more professionally and adhere to transport regulations. The curriculum covers a wide array of topics, including defensive driving techniques, passenger care, vehicle safety, emergency response, and a thorough understanding of traffic laws. Additionally, participants will receive training in fleet management, financial planning, customer service, and the integration of digital systems into their operations.
The NTSA has set an ambitious target, aiming to reach over 4,000 drivers, SACCO managers, operators, and supervisors through this initiative. All participants will benefit from the training free of charge, underscoring the authority's commitment to fostering a safer and more efficient public transport environment. To ensure the programme's effectiveness, NTSA has already conducted a Train-the-Trainer course, preparing facilitators for the rollout.
Upon completion of the programme, drivers and operators will be expected to serve as road safety champions within their respective SACCOs and companies, promoting best practices and safety awareness. This pilot phase is anticipated to inform the subsequent stages of the programme, which will see its expansion to additional counties. Priority will be given to areas with high-risk roads and busy transport routes, where the impact of improved safety measures can be most significant.
In addition to the current training efforts, NTSA plans to collaborate with training institutions to develop professional courses in public transport management and driver certification. This initiative is part of broader, ongoing reforms in the PSV sector, with NTSA striving to enhance safety, compliance, and service delivery across the industry. By investing in the professional development of drivers and operators, NTSA aims to create a safer, more reliable public transport system for all Kenyans.
