The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has started a nationwide training programme for Public Service Vehicle (PSV) drivers and operators to improve road safety and professionalise the public transport sector.
The programme, which began on Monday, September 21, 2026, targets drivers and operators in Voi, Mombasa and Garissa, and the first groups are taking part in a free four-day training course.
In a statement, NTSA said the training is meant to improve driving practices, raise service standards and reduce road crashes.
It will also help operators run their businesses more professionally and comply with transport regulations.
The training will cover defensive driving, passenger care, vehicle safety, emergency response and traffic laws. Drivers and operators will also be trained in fleet management, financial planning, customer service and the use of digital systems.
NTSA said the programme targets more than 4,000 drivers, SACCO managers, operators and supervisors, with all participants attending the training free of charge.
The authority has already completed a Train-the-Trainer course to prepare for the rollout. Drivers and operators who complete the programme will also be expected to act as road safety champions within their SACCOs and companies.
The pilot is expected to guide the next stages of the programme before it is expanded to more counties, with priority given to high-risk roads and busy transport routes.
NTSA said it also plans to work with training institutions to develop professional courses in public transport management and driver certification.
The programme is part of ongoing reforms in the PSV sector, with NTSA seeking to improve safety, compliance and service delivery across the industry.
