The families of two young men killed during chaos at Nembure Stadium in Embu County have been left grieving after postmortem examinations confirmed that both victims died from gunshot wounds.
The victims, identified as Moses Munene and Mike Lewis Macharia, died during violent confrontations that erupted at a United Democratic Alliance (UDA) delegates’ meeting attended by Deputy President Prof. Kithure Kindiki.
The postmortem examinations were conducted by pathologists from the government and the Independent Medico-Legal Unit (IMLU) to establish the nature and extent of the injuries sustained by the two men. The exercise was led by Dr Rosemary Kamau, a pathologist at Embu Level 5 Hospital, alongside Dr Job Mwali, who represented IMLU.
Munene sustained a single gunshot wound to the head, with both entry and exit wounds. The bullet caused extensive damage to his brain and fractures, with the pathologists concluding that he died from severe head injuries secondary to a penetrating gunshot wound to the head. No bullet was recovered from Munene’s body because it had passed through his head, leaving an entry and exit wound.
Macharia also sustained a gunshot wound to his right leg, resulting in a compound fracture and a massive haematoma. The injury caused severe haemorrhage, which the pathologists attributed to a penetrating gunshot wound.
The findings come as investigations continue into the circumstances surrounding the deaths during the violence at the stadium. The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) is also expected to establish what happened during the confrontations, including the circumstances in which the two men were shot.
For the bereaved families, the findings have confirmed the nature of the injuries but have not answered the questions surrounding how their relatives were killed. Family members who witnessed the postmortem called for justice and urged authorities to conduct thorough investigations and hold those responsible accountable.
The families are now preparing to lay Munene and Macharia to rest as investigations into the Nembure violence continue.
