A 20-year-old house help was arrested in Naivasha after an alleged attempt to steal her employer’s three-year-old daughter was thwarted, according to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).
The DCI said the woman had been employed by the child’s parents about three weeks before the incident.
According to the agency, the child’s mother and father left home early in the morning for work, leaving their daughter in the house help’s care. When they returned in the evening, they found that both the child and the employee were missing from the house.
The parents searched the house and discovered that some of the girl’s clothes, as well as clothes belonging to the house help, were also missing, the DCI said.
They then checked with neighbours but were unable to establish the whereabouts of the two. The parents subsequently reported the matter at Narok Police Station, prompting detectives to begin investigations.
The DCI said detectives from Narok tracked the house help’s mobile phone and established that she was in Naivasha. They coordinated with their counterparts in Naivasha and members of the public to locate the suspect.
The house help was arrested at about 11pm and taken directly to Narok Police Station, where she was held pending arraignment, according to the DCI.
The agency said she was expected to appear in court the following day to face charges arising from the incident, but did not specify the charge.
Investigations are expected to establish the circumstances surrounding the child’s disappearance and the house help’s movements from Narok to Naivasha.
