Likoni MP Mishi Mboko has taken a significant step towards enhancing educational opportunities for needy students in her constituency by allocating Sh50 million from the national government constituency development fund (NGCDF). This substantial allocation is aimed at supporting the education of over 10,000 learners across secondary schools, technical and training institutes, and universities. On January 6, 2025, Mboko distributed bursary forms at her Likoni Constituency NCGDF office, emphasizing her commitment to ensuring that no needy child is left out of the educational system.
During the distribution event, Mboko urged parents to adhere to the set guidelines when filling out the application forms, underscoring the importance of following the correct procedures to ensure that the funds reach the intended beneficiaries. The MP highlighted that these interventions are designed to equip young people with relevant skills that will enable them to secure or create jobs in the future. She encouraged the youth to pursue skill-oriented courses, which are increasingly important in today's job market.
Mboko's initiative comes at a time when the special economic zone (SEZ) development is taking shape in Likoni. She expressed optimism that the skills acquired by young people from Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions will position them to secure meaningful employment opportunities within the SEZ. "With the special economic zone development taking shape here in Likoni, we anticipate that the skills our young people will acquire from TVETs will help them secure meaningful jobs here in Likoni," she stated.
The legislator also addressed the issue of rising juvenile crime in the area, cautioning parents against neglecting their parental responsibilities. She cited a recent tragic incident involving a 14-year-old boy who was gunned down while involved in criminal activities. "We are asking parents to ensure that a child that should be in school remains in school. We are asking our authorities, especially security personnel, to ensure crime is brought down in Likoni," Mboko urged.
Furthermore, Mboko expressed her desire to maintain control over the NCGDF funds to continue assisting needy students in accessing education. She voiced her opposition to plans to consolidate all bursary schemes, raising concerns about the accessibility of funds from the treasury in Nairobi. She argued that such consolidation could disadvantage many students in dire need of educational assistance, emphasizing the importance of local control to address specific community needs effectively.
