Kwale political activists have raised concerns over the rising tensions and violent behavior observed in the lead-up to the 2022 general elections. The activists, led by Mwanasiti Bakari Matata, have called for peaceful campaigns and urged the government to take decisive action against those inciting violence. This call comes amid fears that political rallies are becoming breeding grounds for unrest, particularly following incidents linked to campaigns led by Deputy President William Ruto.

During a recent press conference, Ms Matata highlighted a specific incident involving a clash between supporters of Chai Lung’anzi, a gubernatorial candidate, and Deputy Governor Fatuma Achani. "We saw it in the campaigns led by Deputy President William Ruto, there was a riot between the supporters of Lung’anzi and Deputy Governor Fatuma Achani. We don’t want our youths to be used to provoke violence," Ms Matata stated. As a declared ally of Mr Lung’anzi, she emphasized the need for the government to address these acts of violence seriously to prevent further escalation.

The press conference, which was also attended by fellow activist Ms Viola Leso and youth representative Mr Smash Ndoro, served as a platform for the activists to voice their concerns about the political climate in Kwale. Ms Leso stressed the importance of leaders focusing on policy-driven campaigns rather than engaging in rhetoric that incites division and violence. "We want leaders who stand on the podiums to sell policies, not to insult and abuse young people to harass each other," she said.

The activists also directed their appeal to the local community, urging residents to resist being manipulated by politicians who visit the county with divisive agendas. They warned that such leaders may not have the best interests of the county at heart, and their actions could lead to long-term harm within the community.

Furthermore, the activists called on the National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) to take strong legal action against politicians who promote hatred and division. They emphasized that the NCIC has a crucial role in maintaining peace and cohesion during the election period by holding accountable those who violate the principles of unity and harmony.

As the 2022 elections approach, the call for peaceful campaigns and responsible leadership in Kwale underscores the broader national concern about electoral violence and the need for vigilance to ensure a fair and peaceful electoral process.
