KUPPET Secretary General Akelo M.T. Misori has petitioned the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) to review the pay of teachers engaged by the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) to administer and mark national examinations.
In a petition dated September 24, 2026, Misori said the current remuneration for invigilators, supervisors, centre managers and examiners is outdated and does not adequately reflect the responsibilities attached to the work.
He said KCSE supervisors currently earn KSh630 per day, while centre managers receive KSh500 and invigilators KSh430.
For KJSEA, Misori said supervisors receive KSh4,080, centre managers KSh3,300 and invigilators KSh3,060 as flat-rate allowances.
For KPSEA, supervisors receive KSh2,535, centre managers KSh1,615 and invigilators KSh1,665.
Misori further stated that KNEC examiners are paid between KSh35 and KSh80 for every script marked, depending on the subject.
He said teachers handling practicals, computer and agriculture projects currently receive no payment for the work.
According to Misori, the remuneration rates are far below what comparable work attracts in the market and have not kept pace with the rising costs of food, transport and housing.
He also questioned the lack of public participation in setting or maintaining the rates, saying KUPPET had not been given an opportunity to make representations despite representing a significant number of the affected personnel.
Misori has asked the SRC to conduct a comprehensive review of the rates and convene a public participation forum bringing together KUPPET and other stakeholders.
He said the review should take into account current market rates and the prevailing cost of living.
Misori further said a comprehensive review within a collective bargaining framework would address recurring challenges in the management of national examinations and delays in the settlement of examiners' dues.
