The Kenya Meteorological Department has forecast enhanced rainfall in the coastal region and showers in several other parts of the country from Sunday evening, September 20, to Monday evening, September 21, 2026.
The weather forecast, issued on Sunday, indicates that Mombasa, Kwale, Lamu and Kilifi are expected to experience enhanced rainfall during the forecast period.
Rainfall is also expected in parts of Tana River, Taita Taveta, Garissa, Kericho, Kakamega, Vihiga, Nandi, Kisumu, Baringo, Bomet, Homa Bay, Nakuru, Bungoma, Busia, Siaya, Migori, Nyamira, Uasin Gishu, Trans Nzoia, Nyandarua, Murang’a, Kirinyaga, Kiambu, Nairobi, Embu, Meru and Nyeri.
The department has also warned of strong southerly to southeasterly winds exceeding 25 knots (12.5 metres per second) in parts of Turkana, Marsabit, Isiolo, Garissa, Mandera, Wajir, Tana River, Taita Taveta, Kwale, Kilifi, Lamu and Kitui counties.
Along the Coast, Mombasa, Kwale and Kilifi are expected to record partly cloudy conditions with light showers in some areas tonight, followed by moderate showers in a few places on Monday morning and afternoon.
Lamu is expected to receive light showers in several areas tonight, with moderate showers forecast in some areas on Monday.
In western Kenya, Bungoma, Kakamega, Vihiga, Busia, Siaya and Kisumu are expected to experience sunny intervals and varying chances of showers and thunderstorms, particularly in the afternoon.
Bungoma could experience moderate showers and thunderstorms in a few areas, while Kakamega and Vihiga are expected to have light showers and thunderstorms in some locations.
In the Rift Valley, Trans Nzoia, Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo Marakwet, Nandi, Kericho and Bomet are expected to experience afternoon showers and thunderstorms in a few places.
Nairobi is forecast to remain partly cloudy tonight, with a chance of light showers in a few areas. Cloudy conditions and light rains are expected in some places on Monday morning, followed by light showers in a few areas in the afternoon.
The Central region is also expected to experience isolated showers. Nyandarua, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a and Kiambu could receive light rains or showers in a few places during the forecast period.
In the eastern region, Meru, Tharaka-Nithi, Embu, Kitui and Machakos are expected to experience partly cloudy conditions tonight, with light rains or showers possible in a few areas on Monday.
Temperatures will vary significantly across the country. Turkana is expected to record the highest maximum temperature at 37°C, followed by Mandera at 35°C and Wajir at 32°C.
Nairobi is expected to record a maximum of 22°C and a minimum of 15°C, while Nakuru will range between 14°C and 25°C. Kisumu is forecast to reach 31°C, with a minimum of 20°C.
Mombasa will record a maximum of 28°C and a minimum of 23°C, while Kisumu will have a maximum of 31°C and Homa Bay 32°C.
The department defines light rainfall as less than 5mm in 24 hours, moderate rainfall as 5–20mm, heavy rainfall as 21–50mm and very heavy rainfall as more than 50mm.
The forecast is valid from 9pm on Sunday, September 20, to 9pm on Monday, September 21, 2026.
