Schools preparing to introduce Grade 11 have been provided with an expanded list of approved textbooks and literary materials covering academic, technical, creative and applied learning areas.
The list, published in the Daily Nation, brings together learning resources approved for the different Senior School pathways under the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC).
The materials cover Languages and Literature, Humanities and Business Studies, Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM), Applied Sciences, Technical Studies, and Arts and Sports Science.
The Languages and Literature category includes approved English and Kiswahili course books, as well as literary works for Senior School learners.
Among the approved English literary materials are Finepoint Oral Literature, Oxford Head Start Written Literature (Grades 10, 11 and 12), The Master Builder (Play) Grade 10–12, The Bride (Play from Africa) and The Forest No Longer Cries (Play from Africa).
Other titles include The Crucial Interview (Novel from the East of the World Grades 11–12), A Voice of Hope (Novel from Africa) Grades 10–12), Rays in the Raindrops (Biography for Senior School Grades 11 and 12) and Senior School Poetry Companion (Grades 10, 11 and 12).
For Kiswahili, the approved materials include Mbili ya Kiswahili Kitabu cha Mwanafunzi Gredi ya 11, Moran Kiswahili Kitabu cha Mwanafunzi Gredi ya 11, Booklyst Shule Pevu Bobea Kiswahili Kitabu cha Mwanafunzi Gredi ya 11, Kiswahili Tendeti, Kurunzi ya Kiswahili and Akili Pevu Kiswahili.
The Humanities and Business Studies pathway includes materials for History and Citizenship, Geography, Christian Religious Education, Islamic Religious Education, Community Service Learning and Business Studies.
Approved Business Studies titles include MTP Business Studies, Moran Business Studies, KLB Excelling Business Studies, Astute Business Studies, Mentor Business Studies, Oxford Active Business Studies, Smart Minds Business Studies and Distinction Business Studies.
Learners taking Life Skills will also have access to the approved Life Skills for Senior School textbook.
The STEM pathway has a wide range of approved materials for Core Mathematics, Essential Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, Physics and General Science.
For Core Mathematics, the list includes Mentor Core Mathematics, Master Core Mathematics, Moran Core Mathematics, Front Row Core Mathematics, Distinction Core Mathematics, Sharp Core Mathematics and KLB Excelling Core Mathematics.
Essential Mathematics titles include Moran Essential Mathematics, Storymoja Essential Mathematics, Mentor Essential Mathematics, Master Essential Mathematics and Smart Minds Essential Mathematics.
Biology materials have been approved from several publishers, including Mentor, Oxford, Magic Pages, Moran, Astute, Transcend Publishers, Distinction, Spotlight, Highland, KLB, Longhorn and Storymoja.
The Chemistry section includes Oxford Chemistry Today, Longhorn Advancing in Chemistry, Mentor Chemistry, Triumph Chemistry and Access and Learn Chemistry, together with teachers’ guides.
The list also contains approved Physics and General Science materials from publishers including Distinction, Highland, Booklyst, Moran, KLB, EAEP, Spotlight, Newton Educational Resources and Mentor.
The Applied Sciences category includes Agriculture, Computer Studies, Home Science and Information Communication Technology (ICT).
Approved Agriculture titles include Moran Agriculture, MTP Agriculture, Mentor Agriculture, Master Agriculture, Smart Minds Agriculture, Magical Agriculture and Distinction Agriculture.
Computer Studies materials have also been approved from publishers including KLB, Mentor and Distinction.
For Home Science, schools can choose from materials published by MTP, Booklyst, Storymoja and KLB.
The ICT section features books from Doritek, Mentor, KLB, Spotlight, Distinction, Modern Technology and Longhorn.
The approved materials also cover a broad range of Technical Studies, including Building Construction, Electricity, Metal Work, Power Mechanics, Woodwork, Media Technology, and Marine and Fisheries.
For Building Construction, the list includes Booklyst Building Construction, Moran Building Construction, KLB Excelling Building Construction, Longhorn Advancing in Building Construction and Practising Building Construction, alongside teachers’ guides.
Approved Electricity titles include Booklyst Electricity, Moran Electricity and KLB Excelling Electricity.
For Metal Work, schools have Booklyst Metal Work, Moran Metal Work, KLB Excelling Metal Work and Longhorn Advancing in Metal Work.
The Power Mechanics section includes Magical Power Mechanics, Pen to Paper Power Mechanics and Moran Power Mechanics.
Approved Woodwork materials include MTP Woodwork, Bookmark Woodwork, Booklyst Woodwork, KLB Excelling Woodwork and Longhorn Advancing in Woodwork.
For Media Technology, the approved materials include KLB Excelling Media Technology and One Planet Media Technology.
The Marine and Fisheries category features Doritek Marine and Fisheries and KLB Excelling Marine and Fisheries Technology.
The Arts and Sports Science pathway also has approved learning materials covering Music and Dance, Theatre and Film, Fine Arts, Sports and Recreation, and Physical Education.
Many of the approved learner textbooks are accompanied by teachers’ guides to help educators deliver the Grade 11 curriculum.
The expanded list is expected to serve as a reference for schools, teachers, parents and learners as institutions prepare for the next level of Senior School education under the CBC.
