Former Deputy President and Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua has urged Kenyans to demand allowances of between KSh2,000 and KSh5,000 before attending meetings organised by leaders allied to President William Ruto’s government.
Gachagua made the remarks during an address and engagement with Kenyans at the Matt Ross Community Center in Kansas City, United States, as he continued his fourth week of engagements in the country.
The DCP leader accused the Ruto administration of seeking to weaken the opposition by creating divisions ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Gachagua claimed that the government was working to fragment the emerging opposition unity in an effort to reduce the political challenge facing President Ruto in next year’s elections.
He further alleged that the President, working with criminal investigation agencies, had begun deploying individuals to opposition meetings to gather information about their activities.
Gachagua also claimed that the government was spending money to mobilise members of the public to attend its political meetings, and challenged Kenyans to demand payment for participating.
The former Deputy President said opposition leaders were working towards fielding a single candidate to challenge President Ruto in the 2027 presidential election.
Gachagua also dismissed the recognition of Deputy President Kithure Kindiki as a spokesperson for the Mt Kenya community, amid continued political contestation over leadership of the region.
His remarks come as political parties and leaders begin positioning themselves ahead of the 2027 General Election, with discussions around opposition cooperation and possible coalition arrangements gaining momentum.
