Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has held talks with Wiper Patriotic Front leader Stephen Kalonzo Musyoka and the party's leadership as opposition leaders continue efforts to agree on a single presidential candidate ahead of the next General Election.
In a statement on Monday, October 26, 2026, Gachagua said the meeting focused on what he described as the liberation of the country and the formation of the sixth administration.
Gachagua said the discussions centred on the need for opposition leaders to unite behind one candidate, noting that those involved were prepared to make sacrifices to achieve their shared political goal.
“We are all in agreement that we shall make whatever sacrifices necessary to settle on one presidential candidate to be the captain of our struggle,” Gachagua stated.
He further described Wamunyoro residence as an important meeting point in the ongoing consultations, saying it remained central to efforts aimed at restoring the country.
“Wamunyoro residence remains an integral part of all efforts being put in place to restore our Nation,” he said.
The latest meeting signals continued engagement between Gachagua and Kalonzo as opposition leaders seek to build consensus on their political direction ahead of the 2027 General Election.
The question of a joint presidential candidate remains a key consideration for opposition figures seeking to coordinate their efforts rather than enter the contest as separate political formations.
A common candidate would require agreement among the participating leaders on who should lead the alliance, as well as the broader political arrangements they would pursue.
However, Gachagua did not disclose whether the Monday meeting had produced a preferred candidate or whether the leaders had agreed on a timeline for making the announcement.
He also did not provide details of any specific concessions discussed during the meeting or outline the next steps towards reaching a final agreement.
Instead, the former Deputy President indicated that the engagements would continue as the leaders work towards settling on a candidate to lead their political movement.
The outcome of the ongoing discussions could shape the opposition's preparations for the 2027 presidential contest, particularly as leaders seek to establish a common platform and agree on a candidate to represent their shared agenda.
