The Linda Mwananchi movement has condemned an alleged attack on former Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza during Mashujaa Day celebrations in Meru County, claiming her vehicles were destroyed, equipment stolen and several members of her staff injured.

In a statement released on Wednesday, October 21, the group said the incident occurred at Gitongo Market in Imenti Central, where Mwangaza had attended the national celebrations.

The movement said Mwangaza had been invited to the event by the County Commissioner and maintained that she had a right to participate in the national celebrations without facing violence or intimidation because of her political affiliation.

It argued that Mashujaa Day should be an occasion for all Kenyans to celebrate the country's history and sacrifices, regardless of their political differences.

The group also raised concern over what it described as a second attack on the former governor, referring to an earlier incident she reportedly experienced at Gituine Village in Igembe Central a day before the celebrations.

Linda Mwananchi said the reported incidents raised questions about the safety of political leaders and their supporters, calling for investigations into both cases.

The movement also criticised the Council of Governors for what it described as silence over threats and intimidation directed at Mwangaza and Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya.

It urged the council to speak out against what it termed political persecution and defend the safety and dignity of current and former governors regardless of their political affiliations.

In the statement, the group further alleged that hired individuals were being used to attack and intimidate opposition leaders and their supporters. It called for an end to such acts and demanded that those responsible for the reported incidents be held accountable.

The movement wants authorities to conduct prompt, thorough and impartial investigations into the alleged attack during the Mashujaa Day celebrations, as well as the earlier incident reported by Mwangaza.
