Four people have been rescued and taken to hospital following the collapse of a multi-storey building under construction along 9th Street in Eastleigh, Nairobi, as search-and-rescue operations continue.
The National Police Service, in an update issued on Sunday, October 25, said emergency teams were continuing efforts to establish whether more people remained trapped beneath the rubble following the incident on Friday, October 23, 2026.
The rescue operation involves multiple agencies working to reach possible survivors and account for people whose whereabouts remain unknown.
The Kenya Red Cross has reported 47 missing-person cases since the incident was reported. Of these, nine cases have been resolved after the affected individuals were reunited with their families, leaving 38 cases pending.
The outstanding cases are being tracked in collaboration with the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), with teams working to establish the last known locations of the missing individuals before the building collapsed.
The figures relate to missing-person reports and do not confirm that all 38 individuals are trapped beneath the debris.
Families searching for missing relatives have been advised to report to the Kenya Red Cross desk established at the scene or call the emergency response number 1199 to provide information that could assist the tracing exercise.
Police have urged members of the public to keep away from the affected site, particularly along Yusuf Haji Avenue and 9th Street, to allow rescue personnel, specialised equipment and other emergency responders unhindered access.
The operation has drawn support from multiple agencies, including the Kenya Defence Forces, Nairobi County emergency teams and the Kenya Red Cross. Rescue efforts have involved heavy machinery and specialised teams working through the debris.
Authorities are also investigating the circumstances surrounding the collapse, including possible breaches of construction and building safety regulations.
Earlier reports indicated that efforts had been initiated to trace the building's owner and contractor as investigations into the incident continued.
The National Police Service has expressed sympathy to the families and friends of those affected, assuring the public that it remains committed to supporting the ongoing search-and-rescue operation.
Authorities have promised further updates as rescue teams continue their work and investigators seek to establish what led to the collapse.
The incident has renewed concerns about building safety and compliance with construction regulations in Nairobi, particularly in densely populated neighbourhoods where construction activity takes place close to homes, businesses and busy streets.
Rescue teams continue to prioritise the search for possible survivors, while families await information on relatives whose whereabouts remain unconfirmed.
