At least 23 people have died following a head-on collision involving a church bus and a lorry-trailer along the Voi-Nairobi highway, as the Kenya Red Cross continues tracing 38 people reported missing after a building collapsed in Nairobi’s Eastleigh area.

The fatal road accident occurred at around 7:45 a.m. on Sunday, October 25, 2026, in the Kanga area, involving a bus belonging to Power of the Word Church International and carrying 45 passengers.

According to preliminary reports, the bus was travelling from Western Kenya towards Mombasa after passengers attended a burial ceremony when it collided head-on with the lorry-trailer.

The crash claimed the lives of 23 passengers, comprising 12 women, 10 men and one juvenile, according to the initial accident notification.

Another 25 people sustained injuries of varying severity, with some reported to be in critical condition. The injured were taken to Mtito Andei Hospital, where they were receiving medical attention.

Witnesses at the scene reportedly said the bus had been overtaking several vehicles shortly before the collision. However, investigators are yet to establish the exact circumstances that led to the crash.

The accident adds to concerns over road safety on major highways, where dangerous overtaking manoeuvres can expose motorists and passengers to serious risks.

Meanwhile, the Kenya Red Cross has reported that 47 missing-person cases have been recorded since the building collapse in Eastleigh.

In an update on the tracing exercise, the organisation said nine people had been reunited with their families, leaving 38 cases still pending.

The remaining cases are being followed up with assistance from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) as teams work to establish the last known locations of the missing individuals before the collapse.

The exercise is expected to help authorities establish the whereabouts of those whose families are yet to receive confirmation of their status.

The Red Cross did not provide further details on the identities of those still being sought or whether all the missing individuals are believed to have been inside the building when it collapsed.

The two incidents have prompted urgent efforts to assist injured survivors, trace missing people and establish the circumstances surrounding the tragedies.

Investigations into the highway collision are ongoing, while the Red Cross and DCI continue working to verify the outstanding missing-person cases in Eastleigh.
