At least four people have been killed and 88 others injured following a train collision near Giza, south of Egypt's capital, Cairo.
Egypt's Health Ministry confirmed the casualties on Sunday, November 8, 2026, saying several train carriages derailed following the collision.
The State Railway Authority said a train travelling from Giza to Fayoum collided with the rear of another train travelling from Cairo to Aswan.
The accident occurred between Kafr Ammar and Al-Raqqa railway stations, approximately 100 kilometres south of Cairo.
In a statement, the Health Ministry said 72 ambulances had been dispatched to the scene to evacuate the injured, who were subsequently taken to three hospitals for treatment.
Authorities said they were closely monitoring the condition of the injured as emergency response teams continued operations at the scene.
Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi said he was closely following developments and had directed relevant authorities to ensure that victims received the necessary medical attention.
He also ordered an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the collision, warning that anyone found responsible for negligence would be held accountable.
The President expressed condolences to the families of those who lost their lives and wished the injured a speedy recovery.
Images from the scene showed several derailed carriages, with crowds gathering around the wreckage as emergency teams responded to the incident.
The scale of the emergency response saw dozens of ambulances and medical personnel deployed to facilitate the evacuation and treatment of those affected. Rescue teams worked alongside local authorities as injured passengers were moved from the wreckage to nearby medical facilities.
The collision has once again drawn attention to railway safety in Egypt, where train accidents have previously raised concerns over infrastructure, maintenance and operational oversight.
Authorities are expected to establish the exact cause of Sunday's incident and determine whether human error, technical failure or other factors contributed to the crash.
Further updates are expected as investigations continue and the condition of those hospitalised becomes clearer.
