Five people have been killed and seven others injured following a road accident along the Nairobi-Mombasa Road at Kapiti Plains.
The crash occurred at around 7:40pm and involved an Isuzu FH lorry, registration number KAK 548H, and a Toyota Hiace matatu, registration number KDM 632S, operated by Kinatwa Sacco.
According to preliminary police reports, the matatu was travelling from Mombasa towards Nairobi when its driver allegedly attempted to overtake and collided with the oncoming lorry travelling in the opposite direction.
The matatu driver, identified as Lesoifile Lojeu, and four passengers died on the spot.
Two of the deceased passengers have been identified as 65-year-old Nicholas Muti and Nicholas Nzioka, while the identities of the other two had not been established by the time of reporting.
Seven other passengers sustained injuries and were rushed to Machakos Level Five Hospital for treatment.
The injured include 35-year-old Kelvin Mumo and 32-year-old Gerald Mwangangi, who sustained deep cuts to their heads; 33-year-old Benedict Mutunga, who suffered bruises on his hands and face; and 30-year-old Anne Sila, who complained of chest and back pain.
Also injured were 35-year-old Philip Kiplangat, who sustained facial bruises; 31-year-old Gideon Musyoka, who suffered injuries to his left leg; and 42-year-old James Mahinga, who complained of chest pain.
The five bodies were moved to Machakos Funeral Home awaiting postmortem examinations.
The two vehicles were towed to the police station for inspection as investigations into the accident continue.
