A new study by Elimu Bora Working Group has found that 64 per cent of day scholars in public schools are frequently sent home over unpaid school levies.
The study, which involved 388 respondents from 11 counties, found that learners are being sent home despite government funding for education.
It also established that 29.3 per cent of learners miss examinations because they cannot pay charges imposed by their schools.
The study further found that some parents face threats when they fail to meet the payments demanded by schools.
School uniforms were also identified as a major financial burden.
According to the study, uniforms costing an average of Sh15,000 from suppliers are sold by some schools for as much as Sh60,000.
The findings raise concerns over the financial pressure on families and the effect of additional school charges on learners’ attendance and participation in examinations.
