The Kenya Meteorological Department has said El Nino rains are expected to begin next week and continue for about three months.

Deputy Director of Weather Forecasting Charles Mugah urged Kenyans to prepare for the rains and warned against dismissing the possibility of the expected weather pattern.

Speaking before the Public Accounts Committee, Mugah said the rains are expected to start next week and asked Kenyans to take the necessary precautions.

He appeared before the committee alongside Environment Ministry Principal Secretary Festus Ngeno.

Ngeno was questioned by the committee over unpaid bills owed to traders who supplied goods during the African Science Summit nearly two years ago.

He told the committee, chaired by Butere MP Tindi Mwale, that the government was seeking approval from the National Treasury to clear the outstanding payments.

The committee is also assessing how government agencies are handling their financial obligations and service delivery.
