Senate Majority Leader Aaron Cheruiyot has dismissed claims by retired President Uhuru Kenyatta that the late Raila Odinga won the 2022 General Election, insisting that President William Ruto was duly elected.
Cheruiyot accused Uhuru of misleading Raila and failing to give him full support during the election campaign.
The remarks have sparked fresh debate among political leaders over the disputed 2022 presidential election, following Uhuru's claims that Raila had won the race.
However, Senate Minority Leader Stewart Madzayo maintained that Raila won the election, saying the former opposition leader accepted the outcome to prevent the country from descending into violence.
Madzayo said Raila chose peace despite his grievances over the election results, describing him as a patriot who put the country's stability first.
He also paid tribute to the late opposition leader, saying,"Raila, rest in peace. The people you thought were your friends are the ones who robbed you.”
Madzayo added that although Raila lost the election officially, he was a humble leader who chose peace over conflict and remained a patriot.
The contrasting remarks by the two Senate leaders have renewed political debate over the 2022 election and the role played by key leaders during the campaign.
